Character's Full Name: K9 Mark IV
Character's Canon: Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures
Character's Journal Name:
k9companion
What would you like your character's tag to be?: k9
Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): K9 is a robot assistant built by the Doctor in his fourth incarnation, a later model of which was left with one of the former travelling companions; Sarah Jane Smith. That model was eventually destroyed and was rebuilt as K9 Mark IV by the tenth Doctor and continues to live with Sarah Jane. A more complete character history can be found here. The version of K9 for Ten Forward is taken from approximately halfway through the first series of the Sarah Jane Adventures while he was away dealing with a black hole in Switzerland.
Character's personality: K( is unfailingly courteous and polite if somewhat pedantic as a result of his programming. He can tend to be somewhat literal minded and does display some capacity for emotion - although he claims otherwise.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Encyclopaedic memory bank.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: 'Hover mode', short range teleporter, laser stun gun.
Are you bringing your character to
ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: No
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? I know a couple of people who are playing in the game who have recommended it to me and after checking it out for myself and after seeing how awesome it looks I would like to join. K9 is one of my favourite characters he’s very sweet and lovable in his own polite literal tin doggedness.
I see K9 as being a facilitator for plots. He’s never going to be the centre of attention or a key driving force behind the story but he is there to let things that need to happen happen. Need someone to provide that useful piece of exposition? K9 is your tin dog. Even better, although K9 is capable of autonomy he works much better when coupled with other characters. The exposition also works the other way. K9 is naturally inquisitive and will ask plenty of questions about things out of his field of expertise or experience. Also although it is somewhat stereotypical he is also able to ask the kind of ‘what is this thing you call love?’ questions or provide a sounding board for other characters – after all people may be more inclined to tell the robot dog things they wouldn’t tell another person.
K9 has a set of abilities and tools which, while not necessarily powerful, can provide useful utility where needed – or not as the plot requires.
Writing Sample #1:
The room blinked into existence on K9's visual sensors.
"System restarting. All primary drives functioning." The somewhat high pitched staccato voice module intoned the phrase automatically as his head raised up from its dormant sleep-mode position .
Something was wrong and he seemed to be recovering from an unexpected shutdown. Running a basic diagnostic showed that everything seem to be functioning optimally, although his internal chronometer appeared to be missing a, presently unknown, period of time. K9 reviewed his last recorded readings, analysing them for clues as to what could have caused 1) an unexpected loss of functionality 2) the change in location.
"Activating ‘Scanner Mode’"
Even as he attempted to compute a satisfactory answer to these questions his ears waggled back and forth as he scanned the surrounding area and compared the incoming data feed to his memory-banks. The results indicated that somehow, while he had been non-operative he had been transported both spatially and temporally to this new location. Unfortunately, with the present available data he was unable to reach an adequate conclusion – more input was required.
"Analysis inconclusive. Further investigation is required"
The floor around the dog glowed faintly with a pale light as K9’s repulsor activated and he glided serenely across the floor, scanner probe extended and ears still waggling as he sought answers and, more, importantly a solution.
K9 knew he needed to get back. Back to Switzerland, Earth, Sol, Milkway, 16:33:39, 12th January, 2008 local location and time reference to finish his appointed task for the mistress. K9 was a good dog.
